Paired with a new diesel engine, Chysler Group’s Ram pickup outscores both Ford and Chevrolet’s full-sized trucks. The Ram 1500 scored above its competitors with a V-6 EcoDiesel engine that saves impressively more fuel than similar models with gas engines while also scoring better on road tests. The EcoDiesel engine helped the Ram average 27 mpg on the highway, well above the traditional Ram with the V-8 gas engine or Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT.
“These are about the same fuel-economy numbers that we typically see in a midsized SUV,” says Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports. “Ram is currently the only truck to offer turbo-diesel technology” says Fisher. It will be interesting to see how competitors respond and how long it takes for them to hop on board and make diesel trucks of their own.
Ram 1500 EcoDiesel also offers a smooth and ambient ride on the highway, making little to no noise, thus making trips much more enjoyable for your ears. The EcoDiesel may be a little higher priced than its gas engine counterpart, but I believe that the truck’s benefits will outset the pumped up cost.
