Your vehicle gives you plenty of warning signs when things are heading south. Your car may start pulling when your alignment is off, and squealing brakes mean it’s time for our team to take a look. But how do you know when it’s time to replace your alternator?
When you bring your vehicle into Rothrock Motors for routine maintenance, we’ll keep an eye on it and let you know when it’s time to replace it. But you can also watch for these signs in between visits:
Trouble starting your car
If your engine turns quite a bit when you turn your key in the ignition, this could be a sign of many things, including a dying battery. But if you’ve ruled out other problems, it could be the alternator.
If your car has a new enough battery and you didn’t accidentally leave your headlights on all night — yet your battery is dead when you go to start the car — this could be a sign of a faulty alternator.
Similarly, a battery warning light on your dashboard could hint at trouble with your battery, but this often also illuminates when there are problems with the alternator.
Are your headlights too bright? Or perhaps way too dim? When your alternator is starting to fail, it can’t consistently send the right voltage to your lights (and other electronic accessories within the cabin). Dim or bright lights could be a sign that it’s time for some work.
